Press Release

Tibor de Nagy Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Susan Jane Walp, marking the artist’s eighth solo presentation with the gallery.

Walp creates intimate, closely observed still-life paintings centered on shape and texture. Many feature a central spherical form—a cantaloupe, grapefruit, cluster of blueberries, bowl, or cup—set against a tilted plane of squares and rectangles. Each meticulously arranged composition functions as a study in quiet precision.

Like many still-life painters, Walp returns to a familiar repertoire of motifs—among them a yellow glass bowl, ancient Greek shaped vessels, and cut-open melons that expose intricate interior geometries. Revisiting these arrangements is central to her practice; each iteration captures subtle shifts in tone and mark-making, producing meditative and introspective paintings.

Susan Jane Walp earned her BA from Mount Holyoke College and continued her studies at the New York Studio School, Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture, and Brooklyn College (MFA). She recently had a solo exhibition in 2024 at Pamela Salisbury Gallery in Hudson, New York, and was included in the group exhibition Glawr at Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles in 2025. Walp has received numerous honors for her work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship.
